Aevil Earth - an episodic story

Back in 2006 I started writing an episodic story called Aevil Earth. It was supposed to be a series of short, self-contained chapters published once a week. I got through seven episodes before my innate capriciousness led me to abandon it.

This week I am republishing it, one episode per day, to see if it gathers any interest. If it does I may continue writing.

A little background: This was in the days before World of Warcraft became popular, and the notion of a really massive MMO was still in its infancy. I wanted to explore the idea of what a fully-realised online world would be like if it was big enough to enable people to ‘live’ in it full time and make a real living. Of course, people do just that today, particularly the ubiquitous Chinese gold farmers. One day perhaps giant corporations and crime gangs will spawn and dwell in these virtual worlds, and their actions will have real-world consequences. Perhaps these things will happen before I finish writing.

I’ve been coding this afternoon.

I wanted to expand PaulHedger.com to include a separate page for each post. Until today all it consisted of (apart from some meta pages about disclaimers and the like) was an RSS feed from Tumblr on the index page.

In order to generate separate pages for each post I had to extract the content from a particular item in the RSS feed. Doing it 100% dynamically would become increasingly tedious as the RSS feed gets longer, so the solution was to use a database.

First the script checks the database for a unique post ID, which in this case is handily linked to the tumblr url. If it exists, then it is displayed. No problem.

If it doesn’t exist, the script grabs the tumblr RSS feed and iterates through up to ten recent posts. It checks the [link] field for the ID number and when it finds it, grabs the content of that item and shoves it into the database, spitting it out onto the page at the same time.

This solution means the database is only updated when it is needed, so no cron tasks are necessary.

Of course, the front page links had to be changed to point to a subpage in my own domain rather than linking to tumblr (as per the RSS feed), but that was simple enough. A little more complicated was generating the ModRewrite rule to transform e.g. paulhedger.com/123456 into paulhedger.com/post.php?p=123456 but after wrestling with some regex it resolved itself nicely.

After that it was a simple task to include some Disqus code for comments. In the future I might try to integrate comments into the database, but for now Disqus is sufficient.
